Imagine a community where children aren’t raised by their mothers. A community so ravaged by sex trafficking where new babies arrive every week, only to be left in the hands of elderly people who have little means of caring for them.
This community is the Giotto Slum
The Community
The Giotto Slum is a community of over 150 families that live inside the Nakuru County garbage dump in Kenya.
The people lack access to proper housing, running water, & economic opportunities to support stable living.
Sex Trafficking
With no education, no knowledge of life outside of the slum, & little hope, young girls are often lured into a life in the sex trade. Some imprisoned in a cycle of sexual abuse, violence, & alcoholism for the rest of their life.
The wide spread of prostitution in the slum has lead to a high birth rate. The children either being raised by their single mothers or by their grandparents. With no intervention, these young kids will likely go on to be victims of the same social ills as their parents.
Women & young girls in the slum are also threatened by other gender-based crime such as domestic violence & rape.
What LOV Movement is doing to fight sex trafficking & heal the community
LOV Movement supports a local women’s program in the slum. The program is made up of 45 women (32 are single mothers) & works to educate, rehabilitate, & support them to live healthier & better lives.
As referenced before, the burden of children is often placed on the grandparents. For that reason, our food program specifically targets the elderly of Giotto Slum. Our weekly drop off provides a constant supply of food to two of the communities most vulnerable populations: the elderly & the young kids they take care of
We are building a living & education facility that will move young kids out of the slum & provide them with a better life. By doing this we will be able to protect children from human trafficking & break the cycle of generational trauma.
